“The paycheque at the end of the month is recognition enough.”

Last weekend, while I was out enjoying the sunshine, my 16-year-old was drumming up business for his new window-washing business. After spending weeks sourcing the right gear, honing his craft and researching sales techniques, he couldn’t wait to get stuck in.

He door knocked for hours. 10 to be exact. And not a single bite. By Sunday night, he was exhausted.

Now I know this hard experience is good for him. And while I’m not tempted to rescue him, it seems pretty obvious what he needs from me: just a little encouragement and recognition for his efforts.

As leaders with lots on our plates, it’s easy to forget what an impact we can make on others through our words. By default, we tend to notice the bad more than the good, and wait for someone to achieve before we acknowledge them.

I advocate for something different. Walk alongside people, be generous with your encouragement, and help them see all the little things they are doing to move things in the right direction. When they have hope that they will see the fruits of their labour, it’s easier to keep persisting.

And if you’re a leader? Develop a relationship with a skilled coach. Someone who knows when to challenge you, and when to encourage you. We all need the latter from time to time.

As for my son, well, he has big plans for this weekend. Enthusiasm renewed, you just might see him at your door.
