“I can’t say no to that!”

As the year-end rush kicks in, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by all the “shoulds” piling up. But here’s a tip: your calendar doesn’t need to be crammed with obligations. Over the years, I’ve found a few ways to protect my time without feeling like I’m letting everyone down. Here’s how I keep my commitments in check:

Get Clear on the Ask: Sometimes, a request seems huge – but asking a few clarifying questions can reveal simpler options. A little conversation can go a long way!

Clarify Deadlines: Is that “Friday deadline” strict, or is it flexible? I treat most deadlines as starting points rather than hard stops – just asking can unlock flexibility.

Negotiate What’s Needed: If you can’t make everything, try, “Which meetings are essential?” or “I can get it to you by Tuesday – would that work?” It often works for both sides.

Look Out for Future You: Before saying “yes” on impulse, picture your future self doing it. If it feels stressful, have a quick chat to renegotiate now – it’s worth it.

Protect Your Priorities: When you’re clear on what matters most, it’s easier to avoid saying “yes” to everything. I focus on where I can have the most impact, and I’m OK with not doing it all.

So, whether it’s last-minute holiday catch-ups or projects with “before Christmas” deadlines, think twice before filling every available minute. Let’s end the year on a high!
