When Should I Engage an Executive Coach?

Many leaders assume coaching is only something you turn to when things are going wrong. But the greatest value comes when you engage a coach before you think you “need” one - to create space for reflection, growth, and better decisions.

Why it's sooner than you think

Leaders are never short on responsibility.
But time to think? Almost none.

Most I meet are moving fast - juggling priorities, running from one meeting to the next, making big calls without much space to reflect.

That’s why many assume coaching is only for when things are going wrong. Or that there’s simply no time for it.

But coaching is most powerful when you start before you think you “need” it.

Good coaching gives you time to step back.
To test your ideas.
To work through decisions.
To reflect on how you lead - and to stretch into the growth you don’t always make space for.

The right coach will see your strengths.
Respect what makes you unique.
Support you without judgment - while also challenging you and offering the perspective others might hold back.

Fit matters. You should feel safe. You should feel understood. And you should trust they’ll bring the expertise and perspective you can rely on when it counts.

For me, that starts with fit call - a chance to meet and see if it feels right.

Coaching, at its best, is proactive.
It helps you grow and lead in a way that’s sustainable and authentic.
And when the tougher moments do come, it’s a relief to already have that trusted relationship in place.
